Trong cuộc họp dệt may các nước Đông Nam Á vào ngày 11/11 tại Hà Nội, Chủ tịch Liên đoàn Dệt may ASEAN (AFTEX) Michael T.Que nhận định: "Thách thức với tất cả chúng ta có thể tóm gọn trong một từ Trung Quốc". Thật vậy Trung Quốc hiện là nước xuất khẩu hàng dệt may lớn nhất thế giới, vượt trội mọi quốc gia khác với 19,7% thị phần toàn cầu. Theo các chuyên gia, trong vòng 10 năm tới Trung Quốc sẽ chiếm 50% thị phần xuất khẩu dệt may thế giới, hai cái tên tiếp theo được nhắc đến tại châu Á là Ấn Độ và Pakistan. Ngoài các thách thức chung, Việt Nam còn phải chịu thêm một sức ép áp đặt hạn ngạch do chưa phải là thành viên của WTO. Bên cạnh đó còn là các hạn chế trong khâu sản xuất vải và nguyên phụ liệu cho may xuất khẩu, yếu về mẫu mã, chủng loại nhãn mác, phần lớn DN chưa có thương hiệu sản phẩm, năng suất lao động thấp, chi phí giao dịch lớn. Tuy nhiên tại cuộc họp vào ngày 11/11 ông Lê Quốc Ân lại tỏ ra rất lạc quan: "Nhiều nhà nhập khẩu trên thế giới nhận định rằng sản phẩm của VN sẽ có khả năng cạnh tranh không thua kém bất cứ nước nào, về mặt chất lượng cũng đã nổi trội chẳng hạn như mặt hàng sơ mi dệt kim (cat 338, 339) Việt Nam hiện là nước xuất khẩu mạnh nhất vào thị trường Mỹ". Cũng theo ông Ân năng lực cạnh tranh mặt hàng sơ mi của Việt Nam hiện nay đang đứng số 1 thế giới, còn xuất lớn hơn cả Trung Quốc. Tại cuộc họp của AFTEX, đại diện của các nước Đông Nam Á cũng đã thảo luận về việc làm thế nào để có một lộ trình hội nhập nhanh hơn cho ngành dệt may của khu vực, cách thức các nước thành viên có thể cộng tác với nhau, để hàng dệt may sản xuất trong 10 nước ASEAN thành một khối. Các thành viên AFTEX cũng đã đề xuất cơ chế tất cả các sản phẩm sản xuất từ ASEAN sẽ được mang cùng một xuất xứ, được hưởng cùng một quyền lợi như nhau. Chẳng hạn có thể dùng vải của Thái Lan, sản xuất tại VN qua đó sẽ được hưởng các quy chế về giảm thuế của các nước châu Âu.
