Thực chất thơ văn xuôi chính là thơ không vần, hay nói cách khác nó là biến cách của thơ – không vần. Mà thơ không vần trước hết nó là thơ thoát ra ngoài qui tắc của vần luật nhưng vẫn ràng buộc bởi nhịp điệu (tiết tấu) và âm thanh (trầm bổng) của thơ, mà ta vẫn thường gọi là nhạc điệu. Nhờ vào tính chất đặc trưng đó mà phân biệt thơ văn xuôi (thơ không vần biến cách) với văn xuôi giàu “chất thơ“.
