Tỷ lệ lạm dụng và nghiện rượu ở Việt Nam là: Thành phố (7- 11% lạm dụng, 5% nghiện rượu); vùng núi (7- 17% lạm dụng, 3% nghiện rượu); nông thôn (1,2% lạm dụng, 1% nghiện rượu). Tỷ lệ nghiện rượu phần lớn là nam giới, ở độ tuổi 20 đến 30. Với số liệu này, số người tổn thương gan do rượu, bia chiếm tỷ lệ không nhỏ và sẽ là gánh nặng cho xã hội, vì ngoài ngộ độc rượu, cai rượu còn phải điều trị và phục hồi tổn thương gan do rượu.
