Trên thế giới ước tính có khoảng 1,2 triệu người tử vong và 50 triệu người bị chấn thương do tai nạn giao thông đường bộ mỗi năm. Trong đó mỗi ngày có trên 100 trường hợp tử vong ở TTN nhóm tuổi dưới 25 do tai nạn giao thông. Nó là nguyên nhân hàng đầu gây ra tử vong ở TTN nhóm tuổi 15-19 và cũng là nguyên nhân thứ 2 về tử vong ở TTN nhóm tuổi 20-24.
Tại Việt Nam TNGTĐB là một vấn đề y tế công cộng quan trọng với tỉ lệ tử vong và thương tích cao đặc biệt là ở độ tuổi TTN 15-24. Mỗi năm trung bình cả nước có 420.280 trường hợp mắc tai nạn giao thông. Tỷ lệ trẻ em dưới 19 tuổi mắc tai nạn giao thông phải nhập viện là 23,9 % tỉ suất tử vong trung bình 1 năm là 20/100.000 trẻ.
