Nhằm tạo dưng một thị trường duy nhất và một cơ sở sản xuất thống nhất, trong đó có sự lưu chuyển tự do của hàng hóa, dịch vụ, đầu tư, vốn và lao động có tay nghề và hội nhập đầy đủ vào nền kinh tế toàn cầu, AEC sẽ ưu tiên 6 yếu tố chủ chốt.


Đó là: Chính sách cạnh tranh; bảo vệ người tiêu dùng, quyền sở hữu trí tuệ; phát triển cơ sở hạ tầng; hệ thống thuế và thương mại điện tử; từng bước xóa bỏ hàng rào thuế quan và hàng rào phi thuế quan; chấp thuận các tiêu chuẩn và kinh nghiệm sản xuất cũng như phân phối quốc tế tối ưu.


AEC cũng xác định 12 lĩnh vực ưu tiên đẩy nhanh liên kết, gồm: Hàng nông sản; ô tô; điện tử; nghề cá; sản phẩm từ cao su; dệt may; sản phẩm từ gỗ; vận tải hàng không; thương mại điện tử; chăm sóc sức khỏe;l du lịch; logistics.


AEC sẽ hỗ trợ sự phát triển của các DN vừa và nhỏ bằng cách dành lợi thế trong tiếp cận thông tin, tài chính, kỹ năng, phát triển nguồn nhân lực và công nghệ.



Những thủ tục hải quan và thương mại được tiêu chuẩn hóa, hài hòa và đơn giản hơn sẽ góp phần làm giảm chi phí giao dịch.


Cùng với đó, thuận lợi chung cho các thành viên khi AEC có hiệu lực là sự tự do di chuyển lao động có tay nghề qua biên giới các nước ASEAN, nhất là trong 8 ngành nghề được thỏa thuận công nhận tay nghề tương đương nội khối, gồm: kế toán, kiến trúc sư, nha sĩ, bác sĩ, điều dưỡng, kỹ sư, vận chuyển và nhân viên ngành Du lịch.
