LỄ KHỞI CÔNG CHẾ TÁC TƯỢNG PHẬT BẰNG NGỌC BÍCH LỚN NHẤT THẾ GIỚI
Chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết, các đại biểu là lãnh đạo các cơ quan ban nghành, lãnh đạo tỉnh Hải Dương, chư tôn đức Ban Trị sự Phật giáo tỉnh Hải Dương, đại diện Phật giáo Ấn Độ và gần 10.000 quần chúng Phật tử, nhân dân địa phương đã về dự lễ khởi công chế tác tượng Phật bằng ngọc bích lớn nhất thế giới vào ngày 18 tháng 01 năm 2010. Buổi lễ diễn ra thành công tốt đẹp nhờ sự đóng góp không nhỏ của nhà tổ chức sự kiện Hoàng Gia.

Dự kiến, thời gian để hoàn thành công trình chế tác tượng Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni trong thời gian khoảng 2 đến 3 năm. Đảm nhận việc chế tác công trình này có đến trên 50 chuyên gia ngọc học và nghệ nhân hàng đầu nước ngoài thực hiện.

Pho tượng Đức Phật bằng ngọc bích này được xem là pho tượng phật bằng ngọc bích (Jadeite) lớn nhất thế giới và khi hoàn tất sẽ có trọng lượng gần 20 tấn, nặng 16 tấn, cao 3m, có chiều ngang là 2m và chiều dày là 1m. Ngoài ra còn có một Bệ đế bằng ngọc khác nặng tới 9 tấn, cao 60cm, mỗi chiều 2,1m. Đây là khối ngọc bích lớn nhất trong 21 thế kỉ đã qua còn gần như nguyên vẹn.

Đức Đại lão Hòa thượng Thích Phổ Tuệ - Pháp chủ Giáo hội Phật giáo Việt Nam, hàng trăm chư tôn đức Tăng Ni cùng làm lễ gia trì cho việc khởi công chế tác pho tượng Phật ngọc bích lớn nhất thế giới.
Lễ khởi công chế tác pho tượng Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni từ khối ngọc bích thô nặng 35 tấn đã diễn ra với nhiều hoạt động ý nghĩa và rất thiết thực gồm các phần: Nghi lễ Phật giáo; nghi lễ khởi công và bấm nút máy chế tác của lãnh đạo nhà nước; các màn múa rồng lân; biểu diễn võ thuật...

Đặc biệt là lễ phóng sinh thả 1.000 con chim bồ câu để chào mừng Đại lễ 1.000 năm Thăng Long - Hà Nội cùng ý nghĩa cầu nguyện, cầu mong, nói lên khát vọng của dân tộc Việt Nam luôn luôn yêu chuộng và mong muốn hoà bình cho dân tộc và cho toàn thế giới

Phát biểu tại buổi lễ, chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Minh Triết khẳng định công trình này khi hoàn thành sẽ là một tác phẩm nghệ thuật quý giá cho nhân loại. Chủ tịch nước mong rằng trên đất nước Việt Nam sẽ có thêm nhiều người có tấm lòng vàng cao cả như gia đình Nghệ nhân ông Đào Trọng Cường (người đã bỏ ra một số tiền rất lớn để mua khối ngọc bích dùng vào việc chế tác tượng Phật) đóng góp cho nền văn hóa xã hội nước nhà.
