Vào năm 62, một trận động đất lớn đã diễn ra ở Pompeii khiến các tòa nhà lớn bị đổ, gây thiệt hại nghiêm trọng. Tuy nhiên với hiểu biết còn hạn chế của người dân lúc bấy giờ, họ không biết rằng đây chính là dấu hiệu của những biến động kinh hoàng trong tương lai. 17 năm sau, vào năm 79, núi lửa Vesuvius phun trào và Pompeii phải hứng chịu sự hủy diệt nhanh chóng và khủng khiếp nhất.
