Thép là một trong những ngành mà trong quá trình đàm phán gia nhập WTO được nhiều đối tác đàm phán quan tâm. Theo cam kết của Việt Nam trong WTO, Việt Nam đã đồng ý cam kết cắt giảm và ràng buộc ở mức thuế suất hiện hành của hơn 700 dòng thuế liên quan đến mặt hàng sắt thép và các sản phẩm từ sắt thép nhập khẩu từ tất cả các nước thành viên WTO.
