Khối lượng riêng đối với mọi loại gỗ thường như nhau và giá trị trung bình của nó là 1,54 g/cm3.
Khối lượng thể tích của gỗ phụ thuộc vào độ rỗng (độ rỗng của gỗ lá kim: 46 ÷81%, gỗ lá rộng: 32480%) và độ ẩm. Người ta chuyển khối lượng thể tích của gỗ ở độ ẩm bất kỳ (W) về khối lượng thể tích ở độ ẩm tiêu chuẩn (18%) theo công thức:

Trong đó:

Dựa vào khối lượng thể tích, gỗ được chia ra năm loại: Gỗ rất nhẹ (γ0 900 kg/m3 ).
Những loại gỗ rất nặng như gỗ nghiến (γ0 = 1100 kg/m3), gỗ sến (γ0=1080kg/m3). Những loại gỗ rất nhẹ như: Gỗ sung, gỗ muồng trắng.
