 Tất cả BN trong nghiên cứu được khai thác và ghi nhận vào phiếu thu thập nghiên cứu về hành chính, tiền sử bệnh, tiền căn dùng thuốc, tiền căn nhập săn sóc đặc biệt, các bệnh lý kèm theo (như bệnh đái tháo đường, cao huyết áp, bệnh phổi tắt nghẽn mãn tính, lao phổi, suy gan, suy thận, ung thư, nghiện rượu,...).
 Xác định BN được phẫu thuật bụng cấp cứu hay chương trình; số lần bệnh nhân phẩu thuật đến khi rời khoa săn sóc đặc biệt; nguyên nhân và chẩn đoán nhập khoa săn sóc đặc biệt; nguyên nhân đặt nội khí quản và thở máy.
 Đánh giá tình trạng lâm sàng tổng quát thông qua mạch, nhiệt độ, huyết áp, SpO2, khí máu động mạch. Đánh giá điểm APACHE II và tình trạng suy chức năng các cơ quan. Tiêu chuẩn đánh giá tình trạng suy hô hấp và sốc: (1) Suy hô hấp (nhịp thở ≤ 5 lần/phút hoặc ≥ 49 lần/phút, PaCO2 ≥ 50 mmHg và hoặc PaO2 < 60mmHg hoặc khi cần thở máy). (2) Sốc (huyết áp tâm thu < 90mmHg hoặc cần vận > 4 giờ hoặc thể tích nước tiểu < 80ml trong 4 giờ mà không giải thích được).
 Nhuộm Gram, cấy đàm và chụp X-Quang phổi lần thứ nhất nhằm đánh giá tình trạng nhiễm trùng phổi, lao phổi để loại khỏi nghiên cứu và để làm đối chứng cho lần thực hiện lần thứ hai sau nhập săn sóc đặc biệt 48 giờ. Thực hiện các xét nghiệm cần thiết khác theo quy định của BN nhập săn sóc đặc biệt như sinh hóa, huyết học, soi cấy và làm kháng sinh đồ các mẫu nước tiểu, máu, dịch vết mổ, dịch vết thương
