Ngày mồng Một tháng Giêng: là ngày Tân niên đầu tiên và được coi là ngày quan trọng nhất trong toàn bộ dịp Tết. Không kể những người tốt số, hợp tuổi được mời đi xông đất, vào sáng sớm ngày này, người Việt cổ thường không ra khỏi nhà, chỉ bày cỗ cúng Tân niên, ăn tiệc và chúc tụng nhau trong nội bộ gia đình. Đối với những gia đình đã tách khỏi cha mẹ và cha mẹ vẫn còn sống, họ đến chúc tết các ông bố theo tục: Mồng Một Tết cha.
