1. Tính cấp thiết của đề tài
Hòa cùng xu hướng quốc tế hóa mạnh mẽ nền kinh tế thế giới, nền kinh
tế Việt Nam đang dần từng bước hội nhập nền kinh tế khu vực và thế giới.
Ngày 11-01-2007, Việt Nam chính thức trở thành thành viên thứ 150 của Tổ
chức Thương mại Thế giới (WTO). Đây là một sự kiện quan trọng, một bước
tiến đáng kể đem đến cho Việt Nam những cơ hội cũng như những thách
thức để ngày càng hội nhập sâu hơn, rộng hơn vào nền kinh tế thế giới. Các
hoạt động kinh tế đối ngoại nói chung và thương mại nói riêng cũng được
mở rộng và trở nên phong phú đa dạng hơn, đầy đủ hơn khẳng định vai trò,
vị trí của Việt Nam trong khu vực cũng như trên trường quốc tế.
Việc các quan hệ ngoại thương và đầu tư quốc tế ngày càng được mở
rộng đòi hỏi phải phát triển và hoàn thiện các phương tiện, phương thức
thanh toán quốc tế và trong việc này chúng ta không thể phủ nhận vai trò chủ
đạo, tiên phong của các ngân hàng thương mại (NHTM). Các NHTM đóng
vai trò như là cầu nối cho các quan hệ kinh tế nói trên, giúp việc mua bán
giữa các quốc gia trở nên dễ dàng, thuận tiện hơn nhờ các dịch vụ thanh toán
Xuất Nhập khẩu (XNK) mà họ cung cấp.
Sự bùng nổ của hoạt động XNK kéo theo sự phát triển của các phương
thức thanh toán quốc tế và trong bối cảnh ấy tín dụng chứng từ đã khẳng định
được vai trò là phương thức thanh toán quan trọng trong hoạt động thanh
toán quốc tế. Có thể nói thuật ngữ tín dụng chứng từ đã trở thành quen thuộc
với các doanh nghiệp hoạt động XNK bởi những ưu việt mà nó mang lại như
sự cam kết thanh toán cho nhà xuất khẩu khi xuất trình bộ chứng từ hợp lệ…
Qua tìm hiểu về hoạt động của Ngân hàng Thương mại cổ phần Ngoại
thương Việt Nam (Vietcombank), một ngân hàng đối ngoại đầu đàn của Việt

Nam, chiếm được uy tín lớn trong lĩnh vực thanh toán đối ngoại, em thực sự
quan tâm đến lĩnh vực thanh toán quốc tế của ngân hàng đặc biệt là thanh
toán quốc tế bằng phương thức Tín dụng chứng từ. Chính vì vậy em đã lựa
chọn đề tài: “Hoat động thanh toán quốc tế bằng phương thức tín dụng
chứng từ tại Ngân hàng thương mại cổ phẩn Ngoại thương Việt Nam:
Thực trạng và giải pháp phát triển” làm đề tài nghiên cứu cho khóa luận tốt
nghiệp của mình.
2. Mục tiêu nghiên cứu của đề tài
Việc nghiên cứu đề tài nhằm hai mục đích:
 Tìm hiểu hoạt động TTQT theo phương thức tín dụng chứng từ tại Ngân
hàng thương mại cổ phần Ngoại thương Việt Nam
 Đề xuất các giải pháp phát triển nghiệp vụ TTQT theo phương thức tín
dụng chứng từ tại Ngân hàng.
3. Đối tượng nghiên cứu:
Đối tượng nghiên cứu của khóa luận là hoạt động thanh toán quốc tế
bằng phương thức tín dụng chứng từ.
4. Phạm vi nghiên cứu:
Không gian: Ngân hàng TMCP Ngoại thương Việt Nam.
Thời gian: giai đoạn từ năm 2006 – 2010.
5. Phương pháp nghiên cứu
Phương pháp thu thập số liệu, phương pháp tổng hợp, phân tích.

6. Kết cấu của khóa luận
Khóa luận gồm 3 chương:
Chương 1: Lý luận cơ bản về thanh toán quốc tế và thanh toán quốc tế bằng
phương thức tín dụng chứng từ.
Chương 2: Thực trạng hoạt động thanh toán quốc tế bằng phương thức tín
dụng chứng từ tại Ngân hàng TMCP Ngoại thương Việt Nam.
Chương 3: Kiến nghị các giải pháp phát triển hoạt động thanh toán quốc tế
bằng phương thức tín dụng chứng từ tại Ngân hàng TMCP Ngoại thương Việt
Nam.
Do còn nhiều hạn chế về kinh nghiệm, kiến thức và hạn chế về mặt thời
gian nên khóa luận khó tránh khỏi những sai sót. Hy vọng đề tài sẽ nhận được
sự đóng góp ý kiến của các thầy cô giáo và những người quan tâm để khóa
luận được hoản chỉnh hơn.
