Từ xa nhìn lại, giếng như một nơi hút hết nước của biển cả. Khi thủy triều lên cao, sóng sẽ tràn vào lấp đầy hố này. Sau đó, nước tràn ngược ra rồi lại chảy vào, khiến nhiều người có cảm tưởng giếng như đang hút nước liên tục.

Khoảnh khắc nước tràn vào hố và bắn tung bọt trắng xóa được nhiều du khách đánh giá là "ngoạn mục" và "nghẹt thở". Tuy nhiên, các nhà khoa học đã trấn an rằng, dù có tên gọi là cổng địa ngục, nhưng giếng thần Sấm lại khá hiền lành so với tên gọi.
