Từ sau đổi mới, kim ngạch xuất nhập khẩu của Việt Nam mỗi năm tăng khoảng 20%, nhờ đó đã đưa tổng giá trị xuất khẩu của Việt Nam từ mức khoảng nửa tỷ USD/năm trong những năm trước đổi mới lên 48,4 tỷ USD năm 2007 và 62,7 tỷ USD năm 2008. Kim ngạch nhập khẩu năm 2008 của Việt Nam là 80,4 tỉ USD. Cơ cấu mặt hàng xuất khẩu có sự chuyển dịch tiến bộ. Trong giai đoạn 1991-1995, hàng xuất khẩu chủ lực của Việt Nam gồm dầu thô, thủy sản, gạo, dệt may, cà phê, lâm sản, cao su, lạc, hạt điều. Đến năm 2008, các mặt hàng xuất khẩu chủ yếu là dầu thô, dệt may, giày dép, thủy sản, sản phẩm gỗ, điện tử, máy tính và gạo. Cơ cấu này phản ánh xu hướng gia tăng các chủng loại mặt hàng chế biến, chế tạo, và sự giảm đi về tỷ trọng của các mặt hàng xuất khẩu thô, chủ yếu là các mặt hàng nông, lâm, hải sản và khoáng sản. Dù vậy, các mặt hàng xuất khẩu thô của Việt Nam đến nay vẫn còn chiếm tỷ trọng cao, đòi hỏi sự nỗ lực hơn nữa để tăng nhanh các mặt hàng công nghiệp xuất khẩu

This structure reflects the increasing trend of the type of item processing, fabrication, and the decrease of the proportion of the crude exports, mainly agricultural, forestry, marine and minerals. However, the crude exports of Vietnam still far representing high, requires further efforts to increase the exports of industrial goods
