Trong những năm gần đây, dân số Nhật Bản giảm mạnh chưa từng có. Bộ Nội vụ Nhật vừa công bố tính đến ngày 1/1/2015, dân số Nhật là 126.163.576, giảm 271.058 người so với cách đây một năm. Dân số đang bị già hóa, đe dọa đến sự tăng trưởng của kinh tế Nhật Bản.
Trước những con số đáng báo động trên, chính quyền của Thủ tướng Nhật Bản Shinzo Abe đã phải đặt ra mục tiêu ổn định dân số xung quanh mức 100 triệu người trong 5 thập kỷ tới và tăng tổng tỷ lệ sinh - số con trung bình mỗi phụ nữ có trong đời - lên 2,07 vào năm 2030.
