Hiệu trưởng Trường đại học Chiang Mai, ông Pongsak Angkasith, tự tin khẳng định rằng một khi đã chuyển sang tự chủ, trường ông sẽ có khả năng cạnh tranh cao hơn bởi khi đó lề lối làm việc quan liêu sẽ không có chỗ đứng trong chiến lược phát triển của trường. Đây là một hướng đi nhằm nâng cao vị thế của nền gíao dục Thái Lan, đặc biệt là ở cấp đại học, trên trường quốc tế.
