Y tế thôn bản nằm trong hệ thống y tế cơ sở, đóng vai trò quan trọng trong công tác chăm sóc sức khoẻ ban đầu. YTTB là những người gần dân nhất. Họ sống ngay tại thôn, bản nắm chắc được tình hình đời sống và bệnh tật ở mỗi gia đình. YTTB là tai mắt, là cánh tay, là đôi chân của Trạm y tế xã trong các hoạt động chăm sóc và bảo vệ sức khoẻ nhân dân. Vì vậy YTTB có ý nghĩa quan trọng và rất cần thiết trong việc chăm sóc sức khoẻ tại cộng đồng, nhất là khu vực nông thôn, vùng sâu vùng xa, vùng đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số, xa cơ sở y tế và nơi khó tiếp cận cơ sở y tế
