Theo viện chính sách và chiến lược y tế, mỗi năm người Việt Nam tiêu thụ hơn 3 tỷ lít bia và gần 68 triệu lít rượu. Con số này cho thấy tình trạng sử dụng rượu bia ở nước ta đã gấp đôi mức an toàn cho phép. Tỷ lệ người mắc các bệnh viêm gan, men gan cao do rượu cũng theo đó gia tăng nhanh chóng.

Hiện vẫn có tới 90% đàn ông Việt Nam sử dụng bia. Tỷ lệ lạm dụng và nghiện rượu ở Việt Nam là: Thành phố (7- 11% lạm dụng, 5% nghiện rượu); vùng núi (7- 17% lạm dụng, 3% nghiện rượu); nông thôn (1,2% lạm dụng, 1% nghiện rượu). Tỷ lệ nghiện rượu phần lớn là nam giới, ở độ tuổi 20 đến 30. Với số liệu này, số người tổn thương gan do rượu, bia chiếm tỷ lệ không nhỏ và sẽ là gánh nặng cho xã hội, vì ngoài ngộ độc rượu, cai rượu còn phải điều trị và phục hồi tổn thương gan do rượu.

Việt Nam chưa giàu so với nhiều nước, nhưng lại đứng đầu về thành tích sử dụng bia rượu. Đây là một loại thứ hạng đáng để mỗi người phải suy nghĩ.
