1 General information a) the Emergency evacuation of the school may be necessary in the event of fire, bomb, other threat or natural disaster. The default evacuation route and assembly point for each are the same.b) The fire alarm will sound for drills and for a genuine evacuation. Every drill should be treated as genuine and acted upon seriously and with urgency.c) If there is a need to change to a secondary position an announcement will be made over the Tannoy system (main building only) giving specific instructions.d) Any instructions given over the Tannoy will supersede the default instructions and must be followed by all staff, visitors and students.1.1 Alarm soundsa) Fire & bomb threats: intermittent siren and flashing lights.b) School lesson bell: single three second ring. c) Lockdown: announcement "Lockdown. Lockdown. Lockdown " 1.2 Immediate Actiona) If a fire breaks out or another emergency occurs which requires the building to be evacuated, staff should strike the nearest alarm button.b) If the alarm fails, begin evacuation immediately and alert the guards upon leaving.c) Staff in the immediate area of a fire should begin evacuation of students. Do not wait for the alarm bell.d) Upon hearing the alarm bell, staff should put the evacuation procedures into operation immediately. 1.3 Putting out a firea) Each campus has a number of identified support staff who have been House-trained to put out small fires. However, it may be that the initial fire is discovered by a non-adult House-trained. Given the unpredictable response time from the local Fire Department it may be prudent for the fire to be put out by the non-adult House-trained. Such a response could prevent children and colleagues being trapped on a higher floor or could limit the damage to school buildings and property. If such a situation arises the following considerations are applicable:b) Each floor of all school buildings has at least one fire hose and several fire extinguishers. These are designed to be simple to operate. Basic instructions are be found on all appliances.c) The following guidelines are a good basis for assessing whether it is appropriate to use a fire extinguisher or not:I) Do not attempt to tackle a large or well established fire. II) Do not tackle a fire that has already produced lots of smoke. Smoke is poisonous and responsible for the majority of deaths in a fire.III) Before you tackle any fire, ensure you have a safe escape route.IV) Don't allow the fire to come between you and your exit route. v) If at all possible, keep someone else with you, in case you need assistance or someone to get help.vi) If the fire has spread rapidly, or it is starting to, give up and get out. d) There is a well known acronym to help remember the basic safety rules for using the most common types of fire extinguisher:PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze and SweepI) PULL out the pin in the top of the fire extinguisher. II) AIM the nozzle at the base of the fire. III) Stand about eight feet from the fire and SQUEEZE the fire extinguisher handle to discharge it. Release the handle again to stop. IV) SWEEP the nozzle back and forth across the lower part of the fire. Watch carefully after extinguishing the fire in case it re-ignites. e) If in doubtI) Do not tackle the fire if you are not confident about how to do so.II) Put your own and other people's safety first-make sure everyone gets out. III) Never attempt to move anything which is on fire. 2 Evacuation Procedure2.1 Leaving the Buildinga) Upon hearing the alarm the teacher will close doors and windows but not lock them.b) The teachers will turn off lights and air-conditioners.c) No-one should stop to pick up any personal items.d) Office staff, cleaners, maintenance staff will close doors and windows where they are located but not lock them. The most senior person in the room will turn off lights and air-conditioners.e) An Ho (Education Secretary) will check all mezzanine floor including toilets.f) Each teacher will cross check the rooms immediately opposite, and to the left and right of the one they are exiting from.g) The teacher in the room nearest the toilet will check those toilets-the evacuation notice in the classroom will indicate if you are in such a room.h) Students and assistants must stop talking and walk to the nearest exit in silence under the direction of the class teacher.I) Other adults should walk to the nearest exit in silence and listen for directions from teachers.j) The Nurse takes two large First Aid Kits and any students in the Medical Centre to the Nguyen Van Huong (main gate A) Guard House and reports to the Deputy Head of H & S (Ted McGrath) who arranges for those students to be taken across the road and then directs the Nurse according to need.k) If caught in smoke everyone should crawl. l) If trapped in a room, go to a window and signal for help and shout. 2.2 Crossing the Bridge and Roada) Teachers mus
