Phát biểu tại buổi lễ, Chủ tịch UBND TP HCM Lê Hoàng Quân cho rằng, việc lắp dầm cầu đầu tiên là giai đoạn rất quan trọng và có ý nghĩa lớn với dự án xây dựng tuyến metro số 1 của thành phố. Đây cũng là gói thầu quan trọng quyết định đến tiến độ của toàn bộ dự án.
Dự án Metro Bến Thành - Suối Tiên có tổng vốn 2,49 tỷ USD (hơn 47.000 tỷ đồng) được khởi công vào tháng 8/2012. Theo thiết kế, tuyến dài gần 20 km, đi qua các quận 1, 2, 9, Bình Thạnh, Thủ Đức (TP HCM) và huyện Dĩ An (Bình Dương). Trong đó, khoảng 2,6 km đi ngầm (3 nhà ga) và hơn 17 km trên cao (11 nhà ga).Về phía chủ đầu tư, ông Bùi Xuân Cường - Giám đốc Ban quản lý dự án đường sắt đô thị TP HCM - cho biết, đến thời điểm này tuyến metro số 1 đã đạt được 6 triệu giờ lao động an toàn, các máy móc thiết bị, đặc biệt là các cần cẩu thi công tại công trường đều được kiểm tra, kiểm định kĩ càng.
Công trình dự kiến hoàn thành vào năm 2019 và đưa vào khai thác sử dụng từ năm 2020. Tuy nhiên, mới đây Ban quản lý đường sắt đô thị TP HCM cho biết hơn 17 km trên cao của tuyến metro này có thể được vận hành năm 2018, sớm hơn ba năm so với kế hoạch.
