Từ khi Luật Đầu tư Nước ngoài có hiệu lực năm 1988, TP.HCM đã đạt được nhiều kết quả quan trọng trong hoạt động thu hút vốn đầu tư nước ngoài, đặc biệt là vốn đầu tư từ Hoa Kỳ. Tính từ ngày 01/01/1988 đến ngày 15/6/2016, Hoa Kỳ có 331 dự án còn hiệu lực trên địa bàn TP.HCM đã được cấp Giấy phép/Giấy chứng nhận đầu tư với tổng vốn đầu tư đạt 625.14 triệu đô-la Mỹ. Bốn ngành nghề và lĩnh vực thu hút lớn nhất vốn đầu tư từ Hoa Kỳ tại TP.HCM gồm: công nghiệp chế biến, chế tạo; xây dựng; khoa học và công nghệ; hoạt động quản lý và xử lý rác thải, nước thải. Như vậy, so với các quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ khác, hiện nay Hoa Kỳ đứng vị trí thứ 12/77 về tổng vốn đầu tư còn hiệu lực trên địa bàn TP.HCM, xếp sau Singapore; Malaysia; British Virgin Islands; Hàn Quốc, Nhật Bản…..
