Generally, there are two types of monetary policy, expanding and shrinking. expansionary monetary policy increases the money supply in order to reduce unemployment, enhance private sector lending and consumer spending, and stimulate economic growth. Often called "easy monetary policy", this description applies to many central banks since the financial crisis of 2008, when interest rates were low and in many cases close to zero.
