Kiểm tra, kiểm soát nội bộ hoạt động công nghệ thông tin là công tác rất quan trọng trong quản lý an toàn thông tin. Các giải pháp kỹ thuật đã triển khai (tường lửa, mã hóa, xác thực 2 thành tố...) nhằm đảm bảo an toàn, bảo mật thông tin mới chỉ là những giải pháp mang tính thụ động, trong khi đó các rủi ro, nguy cơ tiềm ẩn do yếu tố con người, quy trình... luôn xuất hiện thêm mới trong quá trình hoạt động, phát triển của tổ chức. Do đó, công tác tổ chức kiểm tra, kiểm soát hoạt động công nghệ thông tin để phát hiện các điểm yếu, thiếu sót trong hoạt động của tổ chức, các nguy cơ, rủi ro tiềm ẩn sự cố công nghệ thông tin, đánh giá đúng tình hình thực tế hoạt động công nghệ thông tin và cũng góp phần để các quy định nội bộ được triển khai sâu, rộng và lâu dài trong toàn hệ thống.
