Hiện tượng nền kinh tế Việt Nam sử dụng rộng rãi đồng đô-la Mỹ trong
giao dịch, buôn bán,... bắt đầu được chú ý đến từ năm 1988 khi các ngân hàng
được phép nhận tiền gửi bằng đồng đô-la. Đến năm 1992, tình trạng đô-la hoá
đã tăng mạnh với hơn 41% lượng tiền gửi vào các ngân hàng là bằng đô-la.
Trước tình trạng này, NHNN Việt Nam đã cố gắng đảo ngược quá trình đô-la
hoá nền kinh tế và đã khá thành công khi giảm mạnh mức tiền gửi bằng USD
vào các ngân hàng xuống còn 20% vào năm 1996. Nhưng tiếp theo đó cuộc
khủng hoảng tài chính tiền tệ châu Á 1997 đã khiến cho đồng tiền Việt Nam
giảm giá trị, và Việt Nam lại tiếp tục chịu sức ép của tình trạng đô-la hoá.
