Nguyên tắc là chỉ tiến hành kiểm tra sản phẩm cần kiểm tra, với trạng thái đã hoàn tất việc gia công và tất cả các công đoạn xử lý. Tuy nhiên, khi khó kiểm tra khuyết tật do việc xử lý bề mặt thì có thể tiến hành kiểm tra trước khi xử lý cũng được.
