Mark Zuckerberg cùng vợ Priscilla Chan sẽ chi 3 tỉ USD nhằm cứu chữa và giải quyết tất cả mọi loại bệnh của con người.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative là quỹ từ thiện của hai vợ chồng ông chủ Facebook. Bước đầu tiên, quỹ sẽ dành 600 triệu USD đầu tư vào dự án Biohub, một trung tâm nghiên cứu độc lập đặt tại Đại học California, San Francisco (Mỹ) để nghiên cứu những công cụ mới nhằm đánh giá và trị bệnh.

Trong một cuộc nói chuyện tại Đại học, Chan cho biết hai vợ chồng đã dành 2 năm vừa qua để thảo luận với các nhà khoa học, từ những người đạt giải Nobel đến sinh viên vừa tốt nghiệp và tin rằng có thể làm mọi thứ cho tương lai con em chúng ta. “Chúng tôi đặt mục tiêu: liệu có thể chữa mọi loại bệnh trong suốt năm tháng của con? Điều đó không có nghĩa là không ai bị bệnh mà là trẻ em và con cháu của chúng có thể ít bị bệnh hơn nhiều”.

Zuckerberg cũng có mặt bên cạnh vợ. Anh nêu lên kế hoạch loại bỏ gần như tất cả các loại bệnh trong thế kỉ tới. Anh lưu ý bệnh tim, bệnh truyền nhiễm, ung thư, bệnh thần kinh là những nguyên nhân tử vong hàng đầu. Không đột phá nào có thể xóa sổ chúng nhưng nếu đầu tư vào nghiên cứu khoa học cơ bản, xây dựng công cụ mới sẽ đẩy nhanh tiến trình chống lại chúng.

Theo ông chủ Facebook, tiến trình cấp phép khoa học hiện nay, trao vài ngăm ngàn USD cho các cá nhân, không hiệu quả. Biohub sẽ đưa các nhà khoa học đến với những kĩ sư phần mềm và cung cấp vốn cho các sáng kiến dài hạn nhằm thúc đẩy các khám phá khoa học. Anh cũng khẳng định “chúng ta phải kiên nhẫn” cho đến khi công cụ đầu tiên ra đời và những loại bệnh đầu tiên được chữa khỏi.

Zuckerberg kêu gọi đầu tư cho trí tuệ nhân tạo để hiểu bộ não tốt hơn, máy học để phân tích bộ gen ung thư, chip để chẩn đoán bệnh truyền nhiễm và máy theo dõi máu để phát hiện bệnh ở giai đoạn đầu.

Các nỗ lực khoa học sẽ do Tiến sĩ Cori Bargamnn phụ trách, trong khi Biohub do Joe DeRissi, Giáo sư Trường Y thuộc Đại học California và Stephen Quake, kĩ sư công nghệ sinh học, dẫn dắt. Một trong các dự án đầu tiên của Biohub là phát triển “cell atlas”, một hồ sơ toàn diện về mọi vị trí và phân tử của tất cả tế bào trong cơ thể người. Công cụ đó và những công cụ khác sẽ được cung cấp miễn phí cho toàn bộ cộng đồng khoa học.
