Tiền thân là công ty Gebruder Dassler Schuhfabrik, thanh lập năm 1924 bởi hai anh em nhà Dassler. Nhờ hợp đồng tài trợ cho VĐV điền kinh người Mỹ gốc Phi Jesse Owens, tên tuổi của anh em nhà Dassler được biết đến. Trước thế chiến thứ hai, công ty của hai anh em nhà Dassler luôn bán được hơn 200.000 đôi mỗi năm.
Khi chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai diễn ra, do có nhiều quan điểm bất đồng, điều đó ảnh hưởng rất nhiều đến công ty, hai anh em nhà Dassler tách thành 2 công ty riêng. Năm 1948, Rudoft thành lập công ty Ruda, sau này đổi tên thương hiệu Puma. Còn Adoft đổi tên công ty cũ thành Adidas từ năm 1949.
