Sau 10 năm, các tài liệu kế toán được phép tiêu hủy.
Doanh nghiệp phải trực tiếp tiêu hủy tài liệu kế toán của mình, hình thức tiêu hủy do doanh nghiệp tự lựa chọn. Đối với tài liệu kế toán mật thì có thể tiêu hủy bằng cách đốt cháy, cắt, xé nhỏ bằng máy hoặc thủ công, đảm bảo tài liệu kế toán đã tiêu hủy sẽ không thể sử dụng lại các thông tin, số liệu trên đó.
Thủ tục tiêu hủy: người đại diện pháp luật của doanh nghiệp phải ra quyết định thành lập Hội đồng tiêu hủy, thành phần gồm: lãnh đạo doanh nghiệp, kế toán trưởng và đại diện của bộ phận lưu trữ.
Hội đồng tiêu hủy phải tiến hành kiểm kê, đánh giá, phân loại theo từng loại tài liệu kế toán, sau đó lập Danh mục tài liệu kế toán tiêu hủy. Khi tiêu hủy xong phải lập Biên bản tiêu hủy tài liệu kế toán hết thời hạn lưu trữ, ghi rõ: loại tài liệu kế toán đã tiêu hủy, thời hạn lưu trữ của mỗi loại, hình thức tiêu hủy, kết luận và chữ ký của các thành viên Hội đồng tiêu hủy.
