Hijab được viết theo tiếng Arabic nghĩa là sự phân định hay che lấp, còn tại các quốc gia nói tiếng Anh thì Hijab được hiểu như tấm khăn quấn quanh đầu hay tấm màn che thân. Trong kinh Quran (thánh kinh của Hồi giáo) Thượng Đế nói với các tín đồ cả nam lẫn nữ rằng phải luôn nhìn thấp và ăn mặc thật giản dị. Ngài đặc biệt gửi thông điệp đến các nữ tín đồ về việc không được phô trương vẻ đẹp của họ ngoại trừ việc đó là tự nhiên và phải luôn che chắn toàn bộ cơ thể (Quran 24:30-31). Với những quốc gia Hồi giáo có tính cố kết cộng đồng và đề cao ranh giới của phẩm hạnh thì Hijab được xem như một đường biên chắc chắn giúp phân định vị trí của người phụ nữ trước những người đàn ông không quen biết họ hàng. Chính vì vậy việc mặc Hijab được xem như sự ủy thác. Còn với hầu hết phụ nữ Hồi giáo, Hijab cho họ cảm giác an toàn và được tôn trọng như một người Hồi giáo ngoan đạo.
