Kết luận của hội đồng chuyên môn Sở Y tế xác định nguyên nhân tử vong của 3 trẻ sơ sinh tại huyện Phước Sơn là sinh non, nhiễm trùng, mà sâu xa là hạn chế về trình độ nhận thức của các bà mẹ trong việc chăm sóc và tự chăm sóc sức khỏe của mình. Sử dụng dịch vụ chăm sóc sức khỏe, nhất là đối với bà mẹ và trẻ em miền núi còn là một khái niệm chưa phổ biến ở nhiều vùng sâu, vùng xa, nơi trình độ dân trí và các dịch vụ y tế phục vụ người dân chưa phát triển. ThS. Nguyễn Thị Nha, Giám đốc Trung tâm Chăm sóc sức khỏe sinh sản (CSSKSS) tỉnh cho biết: “Những rào cản làm hạn chế việc tiếp cận và sử dụng dịch vụ CSSKSS và dinh dưỡng của bà mẹ, trẻ em thuộc hộ nghèo và đồng bào dân tộc thiểu số phần lớn xuất phát từ những tập tục lạc hậu, điều kiện kinh tế khó khăn, trình độ học vấn và khả năng nhận thức về vai trò của việc chăm sóc sức khỏe cho bà mẹ và trẻ em. Ở nhiều vùng sâu, vùng xa, các thôn bản phân bố dân cư thưa thớt, hạn chế về chất lượng dịch vụ y tế chưa tạo được niềm tin trong nhân dân, không đáp ứng đủ nhân lực và vật lực. Đây là những tồn tại nhức nhối đối với công tác chăm sóc sức khỏe ở các huyện miền núi của tỉnh”
