Việt Nam đã thành công trong nỗ lực giảm tỷ lệ nghèo từ hơn 60% vào năm 1990 xuống còn 18.1% vào năm 2011 phần lớn nhờ tốc độ tăng trưởng kinh tế cao, với mức tăng bình quân 8-9% mỗi năm. Duy trì được đà tăng trưởng kinh tế hiện nay là điều kiện cần nhưng chưa đủ.
