Ở nước ta hiện nay, việc đánh giá năng lực ngôn ngữ của sinh viên chủ yếu dựa vào các hình thức viết như tiểu luận, báo cáo khoa học, các bài thi học phần, và luận văn tốt nghiệp. Tuy nhiên, thực tế cho thấy hầu hết sinh viên tiếng anh còn gặp nhiều khó khăn trong việc chọn lựa văn phong và ngôn ngữ phù hợp để diễn tả tính khách quan của bài viết học thuật.
