Theo thống kê của Trung tâm CSSKSS tỉnh, tử vong sơ sinh chiếm khoảng 60% số ca tử vong dưới 1 tuổi, nguyên nhân chủ yếu là đẻ non, đẻ nhẹ cân, nhiễm trùng sơ sinh, dị tật bẩm sinh… Cùng với đó, tỷ lệ suy dinh dưỡng trẻ em dưới 5 tuổi thể nhẹ cân chiếm đến 22%, tỉ lệ suy dinh dưỡng thể thấp còi chiếm đến 31%. Một số địa phương như Bắc Trà My, Đông Giang, Phước Sơn, tỷ lệ trẻ suy dinh dưỡng dưới 5 tuổi lên đến 33 – 38 %.
