Theo thống kê của Sở GD&ĐT Nghệ An, sau hơn hai tuần các em học sinh nhập học năm học mới, Nghệ An có 510 học sinh bỏ học sau kỳ nghỉ hè.
Theo đó, trong số 510 học sinh bỏ học, có hơn 300 học sinh nam, 194 học sinh nữ. Trong đó, có gần 160 em là học sinh người dân tộc thiểu số. Số học sinh bỏ học ở bậc THCS là 305 em, bậc THPT là 205 em.
Cũng theo số liệu thống kê của Sở GD&ĐT Nghệ An thì nguyên nhân bỏ học do học lực kém có đến 387 em; 237 em bỏ học do hoàn cảnh gia đình khó khăn và 201 em bỏ học do đi học xa hoặc một số nguyên nhân khác.
Để khắc phục tình trạng học sinh không đến lớp, hiện ngành GD&ĐT Nghệ An đã triển khai các giải pháp như: Tranh thủ sự lãnh đạo của cấp ủy, chỉ đạo của chính quyền, phối hợp với Mặt trận Tổ quốc và các đoàn thể, hội cha mẹ học sinh vận động học sinh trở lại trường.
Về phía các nhà trường, tập trung rà soát các đối tượng bỏ học, phân tích nguyên nhân để có biện pháp giúp đỡ; phân công cán bộ quản lý, giáo viên để vận động, kèm cặp học sinh trở lại trường, lớp.
Các địa phương cũng đã phối hợp với các đoàn thể, Hội khuyến học, các doanh nghiệp, các nhà hảo tâm, các cơ quan thông tấn báo chí động viên nguồn quỹ học bổng, tổ chức vận động hỗ trợ, giúp đỡ học sinh có hoàn cảnh khó khăn, cấp học bổng hỗ trợ học sinh nghèo, thực hiện yêu cầu “3 đủ” đối với học sinh.

Theo Sở GD&ĐT Nghệ An thì vào đầu năm học mới, nơi có học sinh bỏ học sẽ mở các lớp bổ túc văn hóa cho học sinh không đủ điều kiện theo học chương trình phổ thông.
Bên cạnh đó, đối với những vùng khó khăn ở các huyện biên giới, vùng sâu, vùng xa, vùng cao sẽ tổ chức triển khai xây dựng nhà ở, bếp ăn cho học sinh bán trú, nội trú và cần được Chính phủ, UBND tỉnh và các ngành, các huyện tập trung giải quyết.
Năm học 2016-2017, toàn tỉnh Nghệ An có 1.575 trường ở các cấp học với 765.227 học sinh. Trong khi các cấp tiểu học, THCS, THPT ổn định so với năm ngoái thì bậc mầm non tăng 7 trường nhưng vẫn chưa thể đáp ứng nhu cầu ra lớp của trẻ.
Theo định mức bố trí giáo viên tại Thông tư liên tịch số 06, 35/2015/TTLT-BGĐT-BNV thì hiện nay, trên phạm vi toàn tỉnh Nghệ An thiếu 1.700 giáo viên mầm non, 105 giáo viên tiểu học, trong khi đó bậc THCS thừa 882 giáo viên. Đội ngũ giáo viên các trường THPT, trung tâm GDTX ổn định, không dôi dư.
Để chuẩn bị cho năm học mới, các nhà trường đã hoàn chỉnh việc tu sửa, nâng cấp, mua sắm cơ sở vật chất, trang thiết bị phục vụ công tác dạy và học. Toàn ngành đã đưa vào sử dụng 586 phòng học (trong đó mầm non 265 phòng, tiểu học 174 phòng, THCS 138 phòng, THPT 9 phòng).
Sở GD-ĐT Nghệ An đã dùng 1 tỷ đồng ngân sách để mua sách giáo khoa các lớp tiểu học, trung học cơ sở và trung học phổ thông cho học sinh các xã đặc biệt khó khăn, vùng cao, đảm bảo 100% học sinh các cấp học có đủ sách giáo khoa để học tập. UBND tỉnh Nghệ An cũng đã phê duyệt phương án cung ứng thiết bi dạy học năm học 2016-2017 với tổng số tiền 25 tỷ đồng.
