Theo Live Science, phương pháp chữa bệnh bằng cách cho ong đốt hoặc tiêm nọc ong vào cơ thể đã được sử dụng từ thời Hy Lạp cổ đại. Hippocrates (460-370 TCN), ông tổ của nền y học hiện đại, tin rằng nọc ong có tác dụng chữa trị các bệnh liên quan tới khớp, theo Hiệp hội Apitherapy Mỹ (Apitherapy là các phương pháp y tế sử dụng các sản phẩm của ong mật, bao gồm cả nọc ong, mật ong hay phấn hoa).
Nguyên nhân là do nọc ong có chứa melittin, một hóa chất được cho là có đặc tính chống viêm, theo một nghiên cứu được công bố trên tạp chí Molecules ngày 11/5.

Mặc dù nọc ong có thể giảm đau khớp, ngăn ngừa tái phát và chống mệt mỏi, khó vận động ở những người bị bệnh đa xơ cứng, hiện vẫn thiếu các bằng chứng khoa học về tính hiệu quả của nó với hai chứng bệnh này và Cục quản lý thực phẩm và dược phẩm Mỹ (FDA) vẫn chưa chấp thuận cách điều trị này.
