VQG thuộc 3 huyện Bố Trạch, Minh Hoá, Quảng Ninh, tỉnh Quảng Bình. Năm 2003. VQG Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng được UNESCO công nhận là Di sản thiên nhiên thế giới (DSTNTG). Vùng lõi khoảng 85.754ha, vùng đệm khoảng 239.841ha. Vườn được xếp vào danh sách các khu vực bảo tồn đa dạng sinh học quan trọng ưu tiên trong “Kế hoạch hành động bảo tồn đa dạng sinh học quốc gia” và “Chiến lược bảo tồn vùng sinh thái Trường Sơn”. Tổ chức WWF đánh giá đây là 1 trong 238 trung tâm đa dạng sinh học của thể giới.
