Trong 15 triệu người trưởng thành có 23.8% người đang hút thuốc. Hút thuốc lá thụ động cũng là một vấn đề nghiêm trọng ở nước ta. Nghiên cứu trên cũng chỉ ra tỉ lệ người hít phải khói thuốc thụ động tại nhà là 73% và tại nơi làm việc là 56%. Tỉ lệ hút thuốc tự động cao nhất được tìm thấy là ở các quán rượu, cà phê, nhà hàng. Tổ chức y tế thế giới WHO ước tính nếu không có biện pháp ngăn chặn thì đến năm 2020 sẽ có 10% dân số Việt Nam tử vong vì các bệnh liên quan đến việc sử dụng các sản phẩm thuốc lá
