Tôi được nghe những điều như sau hồi Bụt còn ở tại tu viện Cấp Cô Độc trong vườn cây của thái tử Kỳ Đà, cạnh thành Xá Vệ. Một hôm, đức Thế Tôn gọi các vị khất sĩ và bảo:

“Có một con đường có thể gọi là con đường duy nhất đưa vào Đạo, có năng lực làm cho hành (nghiệp) được thanh tịnh, trừ khử được mọi buồn lo, làm cho mọi khổ não vắng mặt, và giúp chúng sanh đạt được trí tuệ lớn và chứng được niết bàn. Đó là con đường diệt trừ năm trở lực ngăn che và quán niệm bốn phép ngưng tụ tâm ý [1]. Tại sao gọi đó là con đường duy nhất? Bởi vì đó là con đường chuyên vào nhất tâm. Tại sao gọi là đạo? Bởi vì đó là tám phẩm của con đường các bậc hiền thánh: một là kiến giải chân chính, hai là tư duy chân chính, ba là hành động chân chính, bốn là phương thức mưu sinh chân chính, năm là phương tiện cần mẫn chân chính [2], sáu là ngôn ngữ chân chính, bảy là quán niệm chân chính, tám là định lực chân chính. Con đường của tám phẩm chân chính ấy gọi là Đạo, nên có thể gọi nó là con đường duy nhất đưa vào đạo.
