Giữa dân số và tăng trưởng kinh tế có tương quan tỷ lệ nghịch với nhau. Tăng trưởng kinh tế đồng thời giảm phát triển dân số thì đời- sống nhân dân mới tăng.
Sự gia tăng dân số dẫn tới suy thoái môi trường, không có nước sạch, không khí trong lành và phương tiện vệ sinh, dẫn đến bệnh tật và giảm tuổi thọ, trẻ em bị suy dinh dưỡng, không được đi học. Nghèo đói dẫn đến bệnh tật, chết vì HIV/AIDS. Sự gia tăng dân số dẫn đến tăng số người không có việc làm, gây nhiều sức ép về kinh tế, xã hội, môi trường. Dân số tăng, song quy hoạch và đầu tư xây dựng đô thị lại chưa đáp ứng kịp. Di dân càng nhiều, tuy có giúp tăng trưởng kinh tế nhưng gây nhiều tiêu cực về xã hội và môi trường.
