Theo ý kiến của nhiều chuyên gia dân số thì số dân tăng thêm mỗi năm đang có xu hướng giảm dần. Dù vậy, với quy ô và tốc dộ tăng dân số như hiện nay, Việt Nam vẫn là một nước có số dân khá đông, đứng thứ 14 trên thế giới. Trong đó, mật độ phân bố dân cư khá cao: gấp 6 lần so với tiêu chuẩn quốc tế.
Như vậy, với thực trạng dân số Việt Nam như hiện nay, này đòi hỏi sự quan tâm phối hợp giải quyết ở mọi cấp độ nhằm hạn chế tình trạng tăng dân số với tốc độ chóng mặt, cũng như góp phần đưa dân số Việt Nam bước vào giai đoạn tăng trưởng ổn định.
