Trên thị trường hiện tại, người ta có bày bán đủ các loại, dạng lều - từ lều một vài người cho đến loại vài chục người... đủ các hình thức, kiểu dáng, màu sắc... Tuy nhiên loại lều này giá hơi đắt.
Là một người tháo vát (hay tập làm người tháo vát) chúng ta phải biết cách tự may lấy lều của mình, vừa rẻ tiền, vừa đúng ý của mình.

Muốn may lều, trước hết ta chọn mẫu rồi làm bằng bìa cứng với tỷ lệ 1/10.

Phóng đại 10 lần lên vải rồi mới cắt.

Gọn và nhẹ nhất là dùng vải nylon dầu, không thấm nước và rất mau khô. Hoặc dùng vải kaki, katê, bạt nylon có sọc...

Muốn không thấm nước, ta dùng dung dịch Acetate d’alumine (mua ở các cửa hàng hóa chất) pha thêm 3-4 lần nước. Nhúng vải vào rồi đem phơi nắng thật khô. Hóa chất này không làm vải đổi màu, không làm vải nặng hơn, vẫn thông khí nhưng lại không thấm nước.

Về kiểu dáng, thì tùy chúng ta chọn. Ở đây, chúng tôi xin hướng dẫn cách may và kích thước loại lều hai mái thông thường mà chúng ta hay sử dụng nhất.

Động tác dựng lều:

Để dựng một cái lều cho nhanh và đúng quy cách, trại sinh phải được huấn luyện mọi thao tác cho đồng bộ. Phải biết nhiệm vụ của mình là làm gì trong đội hình dựng lều.

Đội hình dựng lều thay đổi từ 2 đến 8 người, các trại sinh phải được huấn luyện thuần thục để khi thực hành khỏi lúng túng. Tiêu chuẩn đặt ra là thời gian dựng mỗi lều không được quá 5 phút.

Với đội hình 8 người:

3. Bốn trại sinh đang đứng ở bốn vị trí B1, B2, B3, B4 cùng một lúc kéo bốn góc lều ra, đóng cọc và cột vào bằng nút căng lều (tenteur) hoặc nút quai chèo hay một vòng hai khóa. Phải kéo góc 450 cho mái lều thật căng.

4. Bốn trại sinh đang đứng ở vị trí 1, 2, A1, A2 rời vị trí, đến các đầu dây C đóng cọc và cột vào.

Lưu ý:

- Các cọc phải đóng 45o nghiêng ra phía ngoài.
