Trong khi hướng dẫn và giám sát, giáo viên phải tạo điều kiện và hình thành kiến thức cho cá nhân học sinh và cho cả nhóm, khai thác những khả năng của học sinh trong quá trình học tập. Theo cách này, giáo viên sẽ tập trung vào những năng lực quá trình của học sinh. Vai trò thứ ba của người giáo viên trong đường hướng lấy người học làm trung tâm là người nghiên cứu và người học. Trong vai trò này giáo viên sẽ đóng góp rất nhiều vào kiến thức, khả năng, những kinh nghiệm quan sát được và những kinh nghiệm thực sự về bản chất của học và những khả năng tổ chức lớp học. Như là người quan sát, người dạy có cơ hội “lùi lại" và giám sát quá trình giao tiếp của dạy và học
