Tổ chức nông lương thế giới cảnh báo rằng tình trạng giá lương cao sẽ còn tiếp diễn vì nhu cầu tại các nước đang phát triển và chi phí sản xuất ngày càng cao. Tổ chức này nói rằng việc tăng giá lương thực hiện đã lên mức kỉ lục, một phần vì thời tiết xấu phá huỷ mùa màng. Các yếu tố như nhu cầu nhiên liệu sinh học tăng cao sẽ khiến mặt bằng giá cao trong tương lai. FAO cũng nói những kẻ đầu cơ đã góp phần đẩy thị trường vào tình trạng khó đoán trước.
