Trong bối cảnh gánh nặng bệnh gan do vi rút viêm gan ngày càng trở nên nặng nề, Tổ chức Y tế thế giới cũng đã kêu gọi các quốc gia và các đối tác phát triển xây dựng các chiến lược hiệu quả với mục tiêu đối phó với các thách thức của bệnh viêm gan và nâng cao nhận thức về căn bệnh này. Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới đã lấy ngày 28/7 hàng năm là “Ngày Viêm gan thế giới” và lần đầu tiên được tổ chức vào năm 2011. Năm 2012, Tổ chức Y tế thế giới đã ban hành Khung chương trình Hành động Toàn cầu về Phòng chống nhiễm vi rút viêm gan với tầm nhìn không còn lây truyền viêm gan vi rút trên thế giới và tất cả bệnh nhân đều được tiếp cận về chăm sóc điều trị an toàn và hiệu quả. Khung Chương trình bao gồm 4 thành tố chính: 1) Tăng cường nhận thức, thúc đẩy quan hệ đối tác và huy động nguồn lực; 2) Xây dựng chính sách dựa vào bằng chứng và số liệu cho hành động; 3) Ngăn chặn sự lây truyền của vi rút; 4) Sàng lọc, chăm sóc và điều trị. Ngày 24/5/2014, Đại hội đồng Y tế thế giới đã thông qua Nghị quyết WHA 67.6 về việc triển khai đồng bộ các can thiệp về viêm gan; theo đó cần tăng cường hệ thống sàng lọc, chẩn đoán và điều trị nhằm giảm lây truyền HIV, viêm gan B, viêm gan C đồng thời các quốc gia cần thực hiện các chính sách nhằm thực hiện các gói can thiệp thiết yếu để chẩn đoán, điều trị cho quần thể tiêm chích ma túy.
