AIMST đăng ký với Bộ Giáo dục, Chính phủ Malaysia là Viện giáo dục cấp 3 (đại học hay cao đẳng) theo phần 38, 39 của Đạo luật về Tổ chức giáo dục đại học tư năm 1996. Bắt đầu chính thức hoạt động vào 30/10/2001, trùng với ngày đăng ký với Sở Giáo dục tư của Bộ Giáo dục.
