Ở miền Bắc, thời khắc Xuân về tiết trời vẫn còn se lạnh. Trong cái se lạnh đó, từng loại hoa, cây cảnh được chọn để chơi và trưng vào Tết cho đến những món ăn truyền thống có sự khác biệt rất rõ nét với miền Nam quanh năm ấm áp. Ở miền Nam, loài hoa đặc trưng cho Tết là hoa mai còn ở miền Bắc thì đó lại là hoa đào. Trong tiết trời lạnh những cành đào thắm màu như làm ấm lòng người dân, tan đi cái giá lạnh những ngày đầu xuân. Người miền Bắc chuộng chơi đào vào dịp Tết ngoài lý do truyền thống còn bởi họ tin rằng màu đỏ tươi thắm của hoa đào sẽ mang lại may mắn trong năm.
