Theo đánh giá của Bộ Kế hoạch và Đầu tư, hoạt động đầu tư ra nước ngoài đã từng bước đi vào nề nếp, có một số dự án đã bước đầu thành công và đã chuyển lợi nhuận về nước. Xu hướng đầu tư ra nước ngoài đang có sự gia tăng đáng kể vào những địa bàn phù hợp với định hướng đầu tư ra của Việt Nam như Lào, Campuchia, Myanmar... và vào những ngành, lĩnh vực chiến lược Việt Nam có kinh nghiệm như dầu khí, thủy điện, trồng cây công nghiệp, viễn thông,... loạt các lĩnh vực mới cũng được đầu tư như bất động sản hay bán lẻ. Ngoài ra hàngHoạt động đầu tư ra nước ngoài đã tạo ra việc làm cho hàng nghìn lao động Việt Nam và hàng vạn lao động của nước tiếp nhận đầu tư.
