Qua nghiên cứu đối chiếu các ngôn ngữ , có thể phát hiện được những ô trống của những ngôn ngữ này so với ngôn ngữ kia . Đó là trường hợp một đơn vị, một cấu trúc , một hiện tượng ngôn ngữ có trong ngôn ngữ này nhưng lại không có trong ngôn ngữ kia hay một trong ngôn ngữ này có ý nghĩa bao hàm ý nghĩa của nhiều từ trong ngôn ngữ khác. Tiếng việt có nhiều từ biểu thị những khái niệm khác nhau trong những sự vật của người việt như : lúa,thóc,gạo cơm . trong khi đó nhiều ngôn ngữ châu âu chỉ có một từ duy nhất như rice trong tiếng anh, oriz trong tiếng Bulgaria có nghĩa tương ứng với tất cả những từ trên. Khác biệt đó rõ ràng có mối liên quan chặt chẽ với văn hóa và chỉ có thể được phát hiện qua cách đối chiếu . Như vậy ngôn ngữ học đối chiếu góp phần nghiên cứu các đặc trưng văn hóa – dân tộc và giải quyết những vấn đề đặt ra cho ngôn ngữ học tri nhân .
