Khí SO2 có nguồn tự nhiên chỉ chiếm một tỷ lệ rất nhỏ (khoảng 1/10) so với nguồn gốc nhân tạo (từ những hoạt động công nghiệp, giao thông...).Bên cạnh đó, các nhà máy điện khi sử dụng nhiên liệu hóa thạch để phát điện cũng đã thải vào không khí một lượng lớn NOx. Ở một số nước, lượng khí thải này do các nhà máy nhiệt điện chiếm 40%, còn 60% là do các hoạt động giao thông vận tải.
Ước tính khoảng 80% oxit sulfur là do hoạt động của các thiết bị tạo năng lượng, 15% do hoạt động đốt cháy của các ngành công nghiệp khác nhau, và 5% từ các nguồn khác. Còn đối với oxit nitơ, 1/3 là do hoạt động của các máy năng lượng, 1/3 khác là do hoạt động của đốt nhiên liệu để chuyển hóa thành năng lượng và phần còn lại cũng do các nguồn khác nhau.
