Theo thông tin từ CTCP Tập đoàn Hòa Phát (mã: HPG), dự kiến trong năm 2016, Hòa Phát sẽ phải nhập khẩu khối lượng quặng sắt khoảng 1,6 triệu tấn và năm 2017 có thể tăng lên 3 triệu tấn nếu mỏ sắt Thạch Khê vẫn chưa thể đưa vào khai thác. Nguồn quặng nhập chủ yếu sẽ từ các nước Nam Phi, Australia, Brazil, Ucraina, Ấn Độ.
